The One Who Guards the Don's Heartbeat

I installed a cardiac monitor in the most dangerous man in Chicago. Ever since then, every beat of his heart has been tethered to my wrist. When he gets angry, my receiver vibrates. When he fires a gun, my receiver vibrates. When he spends forty minutes alone in the underground gym at three in the morning with his heart rate pushing one-fifty, my receiver practically rattles itself apart. One day, I'd finally had enough and politely suggested he practice a little restraint. The Godfather of Chicago leaned forward across his desk. Slowly. Deliberately. "What am I supposed to do," he asked, "if I can't help myself?"
