The Ultrasound in the Safe

On the exact day of our third wedding anniversary, I found an ultrasound image in my husband's safe. The date printed on it was our wedding day. The name on it wasn't mine. Underneath it was a set of family papers. He intended to use this child to prove to the Council of Elders that the Marchetti family had an heir. I put the image back where I'd found it, closed the safe, went downstairs, and served him dinner. He kissed my forehead and told me he'd be home earlier this week. I said, "Okay." The family dinner was three days away. I would wear the dress he'd given me, put on his mother's necklace, rise with a glass of wine in my hand, and tell everyone at that table exactly what I had to announce.
