The Wedding Planned Without Me

My fiancé and I were planning our wedding in this seaside town in Maine, and I had wholeheartedly believed that his family had long since accepted me. Until one night, his phone lit up, and a group name stabbed at my eyes: Wedding Planning Group Without Margaret. There were nine people in the group: my fiancé, his mother, the cousin I had grown up with, even the bridesmaid designer I had employed for years. A full year and eight months. More than six hundred messages. Trying on wedding dresses, choosing venues, every gathering in Biaoke Town—they had rehearsed their lines in advance, keeping me completely in the dark. The people who should have protected me most had joined forces to turn me into the fool they never mentioned at their tea parties. I had wanted to quietly leave this wedding with my suitcase, but once I questioned the lies apart, sentence by sentence, I would not let the people hiding behind that group chat and putting on a performance go through with their wedding unscathed.
